John K. Mohney, 97 of Transfer, PA passed away Monday January 26th, 2026 in UPMC Hospital Greenville, PA.
John was born July 4th, 1928 to Muriel V. (Kent) and John B. Mohney in Mercer, PA. He was a graduate of Fredonia-Delaware High School and the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. On September 26th, 1959 he married his wife, the late Margaret “Peg” (Davis) Mohney who passed away October 1st, 2020. John established and was the owner of John K. Mohney Funeral Home which operated in Transfer from 1952 to 1966, he then formed a partnership with Alexander “Bud” Donaldson and moved his business into Sharpsville to form the Donaldson-Mohney Funeral Home, which is still in operation today. In 1964, John was elected Mercer County Coroner and served that office for 28 years.
He was the oldest living past-president of the Transfer Volunteer Fire Department and oldest living Mercer County Funeral Director at the time of his passing. John was also past-president of the PA Coroners Association, Mercer County Funeral Directors Association, Shenango Valley Funeral Directors Association, and the Western Reserve Muzzleloader Club. He twice hosted the PA State Coroners Convention in Mercer County and was a member of the Sharpsville Masonic Lodge 517, New Castle Consistory, Mercer County Shrine Club, and Zem Zem Shrine. John enjoyed hunting, fishing in both the US and Canada, spending time at his camp in Tionesta, and vacationing in Myrtle Beach.
John is survived by his daughter, Kimberly A. (Brian) Beader of Hermitage, son, John Kent Mohney II of Elkton, MD, 6 grandchildren, Jason (Sarah) Fiedler, Ashley Fabian (Ben Elliott), Cory (Deborah) Fiedler, Brandi Beader, Jannelle (Jeff) Renshaw, Brandon Beader, 5 great grandchildren, Braydon, Rylan, Delaney, Willow, Lily, son in law, David Fiedler, also many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Margaret “Peg” Mohney, and daughter, Pamela J. Fiedler.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Erie, PA in memory of John.
Friends may call Friday January 30th, 2026 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm in the Donaldson-Mohney Funeral Home 124 W. Main St. Sharpsville, PA 16150.
Funeral services will be held Friday January 30th, 2026 at 12:00 pm in the funeral home with Rev. Nicole Pickens officiating.
Burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery next to his wife.
