Richard Matvey Obituary

Richard T. Matvey, 96, of Mercer, passed away peacefully on February 12th, 2026, in UPMC Hospital, Farrell, PA.

Richard was born January 28th, 1930, to Mary (Kenig) and Andrew Matvey in Farrell, PA. He was a graduate of Farrell High School. After high school he enlisted in the US Navy and served during the Korean War. On April 12th, 1952, he married his wife, the late Ernestine (Byrum) Matvey who passed away November 21st, 2015. Richard (Dick) worked for Bell Telephone as a PBX Installer retiring in 1985.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time outdoors, building and renovating houses, and was a genuine Mr. Fix It. Richard also helped build the 4M Camp in Forest County alongside his brothers who he was very close to. Most important to him were his children and grandchildren who were always thrilled with his horseplay and innovative antics resulting in many smiles and laughter. He will be remembered fondly by many for his kindness and one of a kind connecting personality. He never met a stranger. A humble man full of love and well loved.

Richard is survived by his daughters, Linda (Philip) Whitson, Susan (David) Anderson, Melissa (Ronald) Flickinger II, grandchildren, Ryan and Michelle Whitson, Janelle and Jesse Anderson, Ciera, Kayci, Blaze Flickinger, and great grandchild, Miley Whitson. Also surviving are his siblings, Delores Christy, Norman (Rose) Matvey, Gerald (Connie) Matvey, and Sandra Dimoff.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ernestine; brother, Ernest Matvey; and sister, Caroline Matvey.

Per his wish no services will be held at this time.

Burial will take place in Mt. Washington Cemetery next to his wife.
